Is it illegal to imprsonate a RETIRED police officer in the state of California?

I have an employee who claims to be a retired sheriff, but I have very good reason to believe that he is not. I would like to know if that, in and of itself, is illegal. Also, he has what he says is an ID identifying him as a retired sheriff and I would like to know if that would be illegal if proven to be a fake document.

Anyone can claim to have been whatever they want, including President of the U.S. Impersonating an officer is an offense when you use authority that is not yours. And a retired sheriff has no more authority than any other person, real or not. I'm unaware of any legal ID that identifies a person as a retired officer of any kind, although it's possible, I guess. Really, what's the point? He still has no authority as an officer.
