Jehovah's Witnesses and other Christians, can you please explain this verse to me?
This has to do with the resurrection of the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:49
49 And just as we have borne the image of the one made of dust, we shall bear also the image of the heavenly one. (NWT)
49Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly. (NASB)
Please read the context of the surrounding verses before you answer.
"And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven" (1 Corinthians 15:49 New International Version). The Christian explanation is that Christ, the last Adam, the man from heaven who became incarnate in a human body, received a glorified body, fit for heaven, following his resurrection. Likewise, those he came to redeem will be resurrected with a glorified body, fit for heaven.
According to Jehovah's Witnesses, 1 Corinthians 15:40-49 says there is a difference in the nature of those who will be resurrected - those who reign with Jesus will be like him, they will be resurrected as spirit creatures, like Jesus. Then they go to Revelation 20:4b, 5, 13 and Revelation 21:3-4 to say that those not ruling with Jesus will be resurrected with physical bodies and will live on earth. The Witnesses seem to have forgotten that the Bible says in Revelation 20:5 that the resurrection of "The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended." Yet they believe the dead will be given a physical resurrection to live on the earth during the thousand years!
Thing is, if you continue to read 1 Corinthians 15:50-57, Paul makes it very clear that God's redeemed people must have newly organised, imperishable bodies to live with Him. The expression "flesh and blood" stands for perishable, corrupt, weak and sinful human beings. Paul is not talking about people being resurrected to live on planet earth!
It also helps if you start reading from verse 12 of 1 Corinthians 15 because Paul is showing that if Jesus' body had not been raised from the grave, then there is no hope of any physical resurrection. Yet Jehovah's Witnesses say Jesus' body was not resurrected! So what hope is there for any person to have a physical resurrection?
I'm afraid their convoluted reasoning stems from their total inability to grasp the nature of sin and of salvation and of what Christ Jesus really did for humanity. Because they think Jesus died only to atone for the sin of Adam, and that when a person dies, they pay for their own sin, then they effectively don't need Jesus to atone for them. That's why they say they can "be good enough" to "earn the right" to be declared righteous, on their own, individual merits. I could weep.
